When MAWSS was founded in 1814, it used Three-Mile Creek to provide water to the city. The public terminals handle containerized, bulk, breakbulk, roll-on/roll-off, and heavy-lift cargoes. The Alabama State Port Authority owns and operates the public terminals at the Port of Mobile.
The city initiated construction of numerous new facilities and projects, and the restoration of hundreds of historic downtown buildings and homes. Beginning in the late 1980s, newly elected mayor Mike Dow and the city council began an effort termed the „String of Pearls Initiative” to make Mobile into a competitive city. Since the change to single-member districts, more women and African Americans were elected to the council than under the at-large system. In 1985, Mobile’s state legislative delegation enacted a mayor-council form of government, with seven members elected from single-member districts. The federal district court ordered that the three students be admitted to Murphy for the 1964 school year, leading to the desegregation of Mobile County’s school system. George E.
